So when 2017 began, you wrote down your New Year’s Resolution: to eat healthier, to lose weight, to stop smoking, to travel more, and to achieve financial independence - among other things. But now that the year is almost over, you realize you haven’t followed through with every single item on your list.

 

Don’t be too hard on yourself. We’ve all been there and the struggle is real, indeed. Just like you, I’m also curious as to how I can follow through with my New Year’s Resolutions. Breaking down your “big” goal into bite-sized portions is one of the most effective ways to keep your New Year’s Resolutions. You know how bite-sized portions of food are easier to digest and process? The same is true for your New Year’s resolutions. If, for example, your New Year’s Resolution is to save P100,000 at the end of the year, then you can list down all the small ways that will help you achieve this. It might be by drinking 3-in-1 coffee in the office instead of buying from the neighborhood coffee shop. Or by setting aside 10% of your income every payday into a separate bank account. Be as specific as you want to be.

 

Plan a Time Frame

Setting a time frame is one of the most important aspects of keeping New Year’s Resolutions. It creates a sense of urgency and it also serves as a gauge to measure your success.

If you’re just keeping your New Year’s Resolutions inside your head, you’re more likely to keep it there. Get a journal notebook or start a blog to document your goals, what you’re doing to reach them, and the results of your resolutions. Seeing it every day will constantly remind you of how far you’ve come and will motivate you to keep on going.

 

Treat Yourself

Working on a New Year’s Resolution is not a walk in the park. I wouldn’t be writing this article if that was the case, right? So go ahead and give yourself a pat on a back from time to time. You deserve it.

Employ a strong support system composed of your friends and family. Let them know if you’re having a hard time so they can help you stay on track with your goals.

 

Don’t Give Up

There will be times when it will be extremely difficult to keep up. Sometimes, you’ll even fail. It's okay. No one is perfect and slip-ups do happen even to the best of us. The most important thing is you know how to pick yourself up after failing. This is not like a Super Mario game where you run out of lives after 4 tries. Keep going and you’ll get there eventually.
